Mercer Island Farmers Market: Sunday August 16th, 2015

Are you curious who won last weekend’s Berry Pie baking contest?  Check out the Mercer Island Farmers Market (MIFM) website to get the scoop! Besides bragging rights, this year’s winners received pie baking swag bags along with the coveted Wooden Spoon trophy.

Even though this week’s market may see a few raindrops (finally!) there will be lots to do at the market and it will be a refreshing Sunday afternoon stroll over there by Mercerdale Park.

Tasting Event: See What’s Freshly In Season this Week

Children’s Table With Judy: Market Colors to Paint – grab a paintbrush and let your inner Pollock, Picasso and Monet create artwork showing the colors you see at MIFM.

Live Music: The Beautiful Strangers. Singer-songwriter, Sheryl Wiser, and Seattle guitarist, Pete Alba perform bluesy songs with Americana roots.

Master Gardeners will be on site to answer questions. Stop by their booth to learn more about gardening best practices and find answers to those questions you have.

In celebration of Market Colors, MIFM shared this about purple produce this week on their website:

Purple. The magical thing about the color purple is during photosynthesis (while the plant is growing) the color purple develops a disease fighting bacteria that the common world now refers to as antioxidants. So any hybrid (cauliflower, artichoke or carrots to name a few) have been breed to carrying antioxidants…
Produce Items in the color Purple:
*Eggplant

*Purple Potatoes

*Purple Cauliflower

*Purple Bell Peppers

*Black Cherry Tomatoes

*Purple Carrots

*Purple Artichoke
