Residents of Mercer Island have a few options for recycling their Christmas trees. The city is again offering free chipping services. If you subscribe for yard waste services along with your garbage collection, this is another option for recycling your tree. Also, the Mercer Island Lacrosse Team is holding their annual Christmas Tree pick up fundraiser. Check out the details below for how to prepare your tree for recycling or how to schedule a pick up with the Lacrosse Team.
Free Tree Chipping From The City Of Mercer Island
This annual service is available from December 26, 2014 through Friday, January 9, 2015 for island residents only. Undecorated trees will need to be brought to the City Maintenance Shop, located at 9601 SE 36th Street. Please drop off your tree during daylight hours and leave your tree in the designated location only. City staff will chip the tree and use the chips as mulch or wood chips in our City parks, trails, and open spaces. Please do the following to ready your tree for chipping:
• Remove tree stands
• Remove all ornaments and lights
• Note: No flocked or artificial trees will be accepted
• Note: No garbage or other yard waste will be accepted
Have questions? Please contact the City Maintenance Department at (206) 275-7608.
Free Tree Collection For Yard Waste Customers
If you subscribe for curbside yard waste collection, you may set Christmas trees out on your regularly scheduled collection day. Please do the following to ready your tree for collection:
• Trees must be free of flocking, tinsel, ornaments, and metal hangers
• Cut to 4-foot lengths, and tie into bundles less than 2 feet by 3 feet
• Please tie bundles with biodegradable string or twine (do not use nylon, plastic, or other synthetic materials)
(Note: Flocked trees are not recyclable and will not be accepted; put flocked trees in the garbage.)
Mercer Island Lacrosse Fundraiser
The Mercer Island Boys Lacrosse Team is also conducting their annual Christmas Tree Pickup Fundraiser. For $25 the boys will and parent volunteers will haul away your tree for you. Sign up online for one of their pick up days and then place your tree out by the curb by 9 AM on the day you selected. Pick up days are available now through Sunday, January 11, 2015.
