Mercer Island comes out on top, when compared to other suburbs around Seattle.
Seattle Magazine’s current issue ranks 110 Seattle neighborhoods and 50 Seattle Area suburbs. Mercer Island earned the #1 spot out of 50 local suburbs and came in #5 in the overall ranking of examined suburban and urban areas.
Here’s the criteria Seattle Magazine used to develop a neighborhood’s rank, as described in the magazine’s downloadable pdf of the neighborhood rankings:
- Median home price
- Percentage change in median home price from 2007 to 2008
- Crime Rate
- Percentage of students who passed the 4th grade WASL test
- Park Acreage
- Commute times
Mercer Island improved its position in the overall ranking of urban and suburban neighborhoods, moving up five spots from last year’s tenth place. The median price of a home on Mercer Island did effect the city’s numbers some, but the magazine’s listed median price , used for the ranking, is $928,000. That’s $25,000 higher than June 2009’s median price for homes on the island. The most current information for median home prices on the island makes Mercer Island even more attractive!
The beauty of the island, and the spirit of the community, is what makes Mercer Island the wonderful city it is to live in.
